What My Grannie and Grandad Told Me… …
April 18th, 2010 by Maggie
Interesting title that isn’t it?
So what did they tell me and why am I talking about this now?
Well, it started the other day, when I went to my daughter’s house to take her some Home Made cakes, biscuits and bread plus some yummy fresh goats cheese from the farm around the corner where I live, and to visit with her and her girlfriends. She has all her girlfriends who have young babies like she does (Brock is 9 months old) around every fortnight for a playgroup.
She does not have time to cook “Goodies” as she works 5 days per week and I look after Brock 2-4 days whilst she does this.
Her friends are fabulous young ladies like my daughter, with gorgeous babies, all around the same age. To see all these tiny tots, learning to socialise, crawl, walk and play is awesome.
They all talk together and see me as “One of them”. We have some fun! Plus I do all the nappy (diaper) changing necessary, to give them a break.
I cannot think, how it happened, but they found out that on the 29th April it would be my 38th wedding anniversary, and to say the least they were shocked. It appears that many of their parents had gone through divorce and they wondered what the secret was to “Staying married”.
I replied with a big laugh “Oh the secret? Well the Secret is doing what my Grannie and Grandad told me”
Now my Grannie and Grandad, had 11 children, and countless grandchildren and great grandchildren etc, Grandad was a master baker (hence my love of baking and making all his recipes known to everyone in a couple of websites – more on this in later posts) and Grannie well was a great home-maker.
They had a huge garden full of fruit and veggies – they had pigs, chickens, rabbits, goats. Everything was fresh and they made pickles, jams and cakes, biscuits, breads, wines, ginger beer – I am sure you’re getting the picture. Plus THEY WERE IN LOVE!
I can still see them walking down the road, hand in hand when they are well into there 80’s. They laughed everyday, let go of the little things (No body is perfect Maggie they used to say) and did little things to surprise each other.
I am sure most of you know that I live in Australia, but it never used to be that way, I was born in Hampshire UK, and came out here when I was 15 with my parents, leaving extended family.
My husband Lyndon came from Wales, and came out here on his own and hence we met and fell in love and ELOPED to UK to be married (Yes another story). I took him to meet Grannie and Grandad and they fell in love with him.
Looking at each other over the kitchen table and holding hands, they looked at us and said, we feel we must give you this piece of advice, if you take it, you will stay married until death to you part and the advice was …
“Never let the sun set on an argument, never be too proud to say I am Sorry and never let your children come between you “Keeping Love Alive” remember every relationship needs to be tended lovingly just like a garden, Neglect the garden and it will die”
“The Girls” were amazed, and then came the discussion on “How to Keep Love Alive” and “But little surprises can be expensive – I don’t have much money to throw around”. I gave them a few ideas of things that DID NOT COST MONEY and they were totally Gob-smacked!
In fact, I have penned a book that will help you
- Learn what to do when your Partner is tired – so they feel nurtured and appreciated.
- Make a special surprising occasion out of something small everyday. There is power here to make your partner feel appreciated, loved and needed everyday.
- Learn how to invigorate your relationship without draining your own resources – a Win/Win for everyone.
- Plus a whole lot more.
What are you waiting for? Honestly, I can say, I love my husband now, just as much as I did when we were first married.
