I am a Cancer Survivor and fully understand that Yoga Benefits and Cancer patients go together, let me explain.
Yoga And Cancer Survivors
Once I came out of hospital I knew I had to get stronger and strengthen my core. Plus I knew I must stretch out my adhesions and scar tissue on the inside that would arise when healing and scar lines on the outside in order for them to become more flexible.
Two massive operations in less than 12 months had left me stiff, sore and unable to do certain things. I did not want my body to “set”. I wanted to get on the floor with my grandchildren, garden, bend and stretch as normal.
Also part of what they took in my second operation was my posterior diaphragm. This not only helps us breath it helps us lift. So I was told I was not allowed to lift anything over 5kg (11 ½ lbs.) ever again. So my back and arms muscles needed to be strengthened. Also what I found scary was I tried to walk up a few stairs and just couldn’t do it. My back and left hip wouldn’t let me plus I found I became breathless as my left lung was not working correctly. Action was needed!
BEST Yoga Poses Cancer
I decided to work with a specialist yoga teacher on a one on one basis. I am so grateful to her, without her I wouldn’t be doing the things I am doing now. It was hard work, she was tough but gentle and I felt secure that with her knowledge and direction and my dedication to working on my body daily, I would improve.
I started doing chair Yoga and practiced everyday what I was taught in my lessons and slowly but surely my body strengthened in all areas and my posture improved.
I only went as far as my body allowed in each session but little by little I could do more. One thing I did notice very quickly was I developed not only physical but mental strength as well.
People of all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities can do yoga and my teacher adapted it to suit my capabilities. Yoga stretches and exercises are designed to increase your strength and durability and get you in touch with your body. A big part of yoga is the focused and centred breathing techniques, which I desperately needed. These breathing techniques helped me open up my lungs especially my left lung and after a few weeks I felt incredible benefits.
For those with cancer or cancer survivors it is so important to do yoga as part of your recovery program as it will help you boost your energy, build flexibility, strength, and more important a range of motions. It also helps restore bone loss, muscular strength, circulation, digestion and importantly your lymphatic flow.
